Interview with Robert Magginetti

q) Introduce yourself first please?

a)Hi , I'm Robert Magginetti from Hayward, California. My collage website is Tranquility Base.

q) How did you get into art?

a)I got into art when I was in Junior High school. I liked to draw when I was very young.

q) Who has been the biggest influence on you?

a)My biggest influence has been Kandinsky.

q) Do you rule by any tendency in your creative work, or you only follow what comes in your mind?

a)My work is driven by what I'm interested in at the time, although landscape always seems to be a constant theme.

q) Do you have a preferred medium to work on? Why?

a)I like working in collage, although I also work in India ink and brush. I like both of these forms for their spontaneity and the risk involved.

q) How much does your environment have an effect on your pictures?

a)My work environment? Not much.

q) Tell us about your studio space. Where do you work? Do you listen to certain types of music while working?

a)I work on my kitchen table. Sometimes I listen to music when I work, however, it generally has no influence on my work.

q) Who are your favorite artists?

a)Kandisnky, Pollock, DeKooning, Bruce Conner, Joseph Cornell, Monet, Bonnard, De Chirico, Redon.

q )When have you started using the internet and what role does this form of communication play for you, personally, for your art, and for your business?

a)I've had my website since 1998. I use my website as a way to bypass the gallery system and to reach an international audience. I don't generally sell my art so business doesn't come into it. The internet doesn't have much of an influence on my art.

q) What books are on your nightstand?

a)Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown and Art Forms from the Ocean by Ernst Haeckel.

q) What's playing on your stereo?

a)The Paranoids.

q) Any interesting "rituals" before you start creating?

a)I clean up the house.

q) What is your favorite colour?

a)Cerulean Blue

q) What is the best time in the day for you to work on a project? Is there one, or is it more about the environment -- maybe the right mood?

a)Afternoon or Evening. I don't know about the right mood. I just need a chunk of time to concentrate and relax.

q) What projects mean a lot to you at the moment?

a)I'm working on a Day of the Dead "box" for an Oakland Museum show this fall.

q)Your contacts…

Interview with Luster Kaboom

q) Well, first of all please tell us a little about yourself.

a)I live in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona in the United States with my wife, two children, dog and two cats. Phoenix is the hottest city in America. I want to move somewhere else but the winters here won’t let me go. I love the winter warmth.

q) Had you always planned on being an artist [or had you other hopes]?

a)As a child I was bored and lonely. Drawing was a way to pass the time. I do not think it would turn into a carreer till I decided to go to art school. Now I wish I was anything but an artist! Haha, just kidding.

q) Do you have a preferred medium to work on? Why?

a)Lately I have been building large panels and stretching canvas over them. This came about because I like the structure of the wood to paint on. You can lay it flat and get on top of it or whatever whereas canvas can only be painted upright with minimal pressure. I like canvas though because it is so clean and smooth. It hides nails and imperfections and if ever the panel were to become structurally unsound you could remove the canvas and build a new panel.

q) How would you describe your style?

a)When you make love you can have it nice and slow or you can have it fast and nasty. I always liked fast and nasty! I don’t mind working on a large piece for a long time as long as its executed fast and nasty. Otherwise I get bored and abandon the project. Like the work where there are crowds of people, if I can do 7 or 8 people a day that’s good enough for me. Any slower than that and it’s likely to be set aside indefinitely.

q) Do you go through any certain processes while trying to produce your work?

a)From a technical side I guess I lay down backgrounds and then add the subjects of my paintings but other than that I have a very random process. Kind of starts from an idea and grows from there. I never really know what's going to happen till its over.

q) What are you working on at present?

a)I’m working on a cowboy painting of a little whorehouse with all these little cowboys chasing naked whores all over the desert. It’s a small painting collaboration with Jodi Maas. Unlike me, She’s a serious respectable painter but she has a sense of humor to let me ruin her nice landscape with unruly cowboys. It’s for a cowboy show at a gallery here called Pravus. I’m also working on a few small paintings to send to the Pony Club gallery in Portland.
q) What about recent sources of inspirations?

a)Comic books are what really drive my art. I started out and went to school to do comics. When it was hard for me financially I turned to painting for illustration and gallery shows. I am working on doing new comics though.

q) What are some of your obsessions?

a)I love old photos. I like to collect them. Sometimes people think its strange to collect photos of other people but I love to look at all kinds of people. That and comic books. I love to read comic books. Fruit smoothies too I would die for a fruit smoothie.

q) Which galleries have you shown at and which galleries would you like to show at?

a)I just finished a show here in Phoenix at the Chocolate Factory. Last year I was in a show at the Mesa Arts center which was really awesome and the year before that Colin Chillag and I did a collaborative show at Angstrom Gallery in LA.
I would really like to show more places out of state or abroad perhaps. Anywhere they will have me!

q) If people would like to contact you, how would you like to be contacted?

a)I suppose through my email:

or through my myspace account
q) Do you have any suggestions or advice for artists that are just starting out?

a)Do what you like because you will have to do it for a long time. Don’t change styles because of trends. If you stay with a style you like long enough, it will become its own trend and you will win the game!

q) Who are your favorite artists?

a)Bwana Spoons is my first favourite artist. The first time I saw his art I fell in love with his sense of humor and his stupid zines. My second favourite artist would have to be Colin Chillag. He’s a good friend of mine now but before I knew him I traded my pickup truck to have one of his paintings. My third favourite artist would have to be Jordan Crane. The first time I saw his comic “last lonely Saturday” or something like that I did not like him but after that I saw he had lots of comics and illustrations of sad and crazy stories and lots of killing and bears eating people and stuff. There is also this artist named jon Haddock. He’s pretty amazing. He just stared doing these kinetic sculptures that move with all these homemade gears and mechanics. I supposed I have a lot of favourite artists. Basil wolverton. David Sandlin. Kaz. Max Anderson. Dave Choe-san one. Aubrey Beardsley. Oh wait, scratch all that, Salvadork Dali is my Favorite Artist of all time!

q) What books are on your nightstand?

a)I don’t have any books on my nightstand but I have been reading this zine called “Old Growth” by this guy named scrappers. I got it for free when I ordered a calendar off bwana spoons website. I also been trying to read this book “the Secret Source” by Maja D’Aoust.

q) To what weaknesses are you most indulgent?

a)Porn?

Interview with Marion Kaehler

q) Name?

a) Marion Kaehler

q) Location?

a) Zurich, Switzerland

q) Contact info?

a)
www.marionkaehler.com,

me@marionkaehler.com

q) How did you get started making art?

a) I used to draw a lot as a kid and when I grew older I found it’s one thing I really enjoy doing and actually can concentrate on. I love to work with my hands and with my head and always wanted to do it as a living.
Eventually I studied graphic design in London und I think it’s one of the best choices I ever made. I love graphic design and, in my case, doing art-related project is more of a bi-product of my graphic design. It’s the ideas that don’t fit into the regular work anymore.

q) How would you describe your art?

a) My work is very linear and reduced. I like clear shapes, forms and colour. I did one year of foundation course in art & design in Basel that was based on the Bauhaus principles, which influenced me a lot.

q) Where do you get the inspiration for your art?

a) The city, nature, people, conversations, art, music, books, anything basically. And I like details.

q) What other artists inspire you?

a) I love the screen printed gig posters from people such as the Heads of State, the Small Stakes, Patent Pending Industries etc. And a lot of graphic designers and Illustrators such as Stefan Sagmeister, Non-Format, Michel Casarramona, Buero Destruct etc.

q) Where can someone purchase your works?

a) At Nelly Duff, 156 Columbia Road, London E2 7RG,
www.nellyduff.com
or by contacting me@marionkaehler.com

q) What is your main medium of choice?

a) Screen print

q) What advice could you give to someone who wants to be an artist?

a) I think being an artist is a natural process that you grow into or not. Artists have a self-drive and an urge to express their feelings or ideas. So I would say, just go for it and see what comes out.

q) What are you doing when you are not creating art?

a)Just the regular stuff such as working, sleeping, hanging around…

q) What does music, in its entirety, mean to you?

a) I constantly listen to music. I feel I work better with music. What I love about it is that it connects you to other people, it gives you a sense of home wherever you go.

q) What does art, in its entirety, mean to you?

a) Art, including music, literature, architecture etc, means everything. Sometimes I think people underestimate the importance of art and how essential it is for us to see the extraordinary products of other people minds. I reckon D.H. Lawrence said it all with “The human soul needs actual beauty more than bread.”

Interview with Reinier Gamboa

q)Name?

a)Reinier Gamboa

q)Location?

a)Miami,FL. USA

q)Contact info.?

3053181206

q)How did you get started making art?

a)When I was a child growing up in Cuba, I would watch in amazement as my father would paint in his spare time at home. He always encouraged me to draw, so I started as soon as I could hold a pencil. I’ve been drawing for about 21 years now. I’m turning 24 in March.

q)How would you describe your art?

a)A trip!

q)Where do you get the inspiration for your art?

a)There’s a line in one of my favorite movies, Waking Life, that goes something like… “ The ongoing WOW is happening right NOW”. In this life, anything can be inspiring as long as a person is aware of and open to that. I find different philosophies fascinating, as well as our history and relationship with ourselves, each other and the rest of nature.

q)What other artists inspire you?
a)Rembrandt, Klimt, Alma Tadema, Ingres, Kate Kollwitz, Mucha, Sargent, Vermeer, Bouguereau, Phil Hale, Dali, Rockwell, Vincent Hui, Andrew Hem, James Jean, Vania Zouravliov, Redon, David Mack, Kent Williams, Caravaggio, Bama, Atlas, Frank Stockton, Jenny Saville, Howard Pyle, Glexis Novoa, Kallela, Velazquez, El Greco, Rauschenberg, Gary Meyer, Aramis O’Reilly, Michael Hussar, Sean Cheetham, and many many more!

q)Where can someone purchase your works?

a)They can contact me personally about that.

q)What is your main medium of choice?

a)I love cheap ballpoint pens. When it comes to paintings, as of lately I’ve been dedicating my time to exploring oil painting.

q)What are you working on now?

a)I’m working on “making the familiar seem strange”.

q)What advice could you give to someone who wants tobe an artist?

a)Start right now. Learn the rules before you break them. Draw as much as you possibly can, especially from observation. Don’t be afraid of criticism. Losing your ego is part of the beautiful metamorphosis. Don’t try to live up to someone else’s expectations, set up your own standards and be the best that YOU can be. Take a good honest look at who you are and why you’re doing this. Learn from everyone and everything. Deemphasize the end-result and learn to love the process itself.
q) What are you doing when you are not creating art?
a)Reading, Wondering, Doing research, interacting with other humans, loving life
q) What does music, in its entirety, mean to you?
a)Music goes hand in hand with what I do. Being able to listen to good music, to me, is as important as being able to see.

q) What does art, in its entirety, mean to you?

a)Art is anything that creates a sense of wonder and inspires.
q) Are there some web sites that You would like to recomend? Artists, artcommunities, xxx,...!?

a)Sean Barber ( an excellent painter) has a really good website filled with useful information for artists. Sdbarber.com
