q) Please introduce yourself.

a)Hello! My name is Thierry Jaspart, 23 years old... I'm an illustrator / graphic designer.

q) Where do you live and work?

a)I live and work in
Liège, Belgium.

q) How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?

a)I think that others should speak better than me, but... It's visual art. Mainly illustrations, but also computer graphics, street art, engraving, etc. I also enjoy doing digital live painting performances at concerts or parties.

I try to vary my work as much as possible. I draw a lot of birds...

For me, a work is ready to be published when it makes me laugh.

q) How did you start in the arts? How / when did you realize you were an artist?

a)Since I was a child... This is what I always wanted to do.

q) What are your favorite art materials and why?

a)Adobe Photoshop and my Wacom tablet because I always been a "nerd", hehe...

The linocut, because I like net and synthetic forms. I really enjoy digging the pattern, print it...

Pencils too...

q) What / who influences you most?

a)The everyday life. The people I meet, what I find absurd or what makes me laugh...

q) Describe a typical day of art making for you.

a)I get up late, but chhht! it shouldn't be repeated!

I open a can of soda.

I prepare a few sheets and a pencil.

I turn on my computer.

I put some music.

And here we go!

q) Do you have goals, specific things you want to achieve with your art or in your career as an artist?

a)To continue to publicize my work, hoping it's appreciated. I want to continue to have fun, work on interesting projects with cool people...

q) What contemporary artists or developments in art interest you?

a)Digital art, VJing, street art...

q) How long does it typically take you to finish a piece?

a)It depends, but usually I draw quite fast.

q) Do you enjoy selling your pieces, or are you emotionally attached to them?

a)I'm quite sad sometimes when I'm attached to a work, but this doesn't really matter... Buy! Buy Now! ;-)

q) Is music important to you? If so, what are some things you're listening to now?

a)Yeah! This is one of my passions. Actually, I'm pretty eclectic... Perhaps a slight preference for rock music, electronic music, folk...

q) Books?

a)Unfortunately, I'm not a big reader... But I have a lot of illustrated books in my library.

q) What theories or beliefs do you have regarding creativity or the creative process?

a)I like artists who produce personal work... An idea is always better when it's true and assumed.

q) What do you do (or what do you enjoy doing) when you're not creating?

a)Spending time on social networks on the Internet, going out with friends, listening to music...

q) Do you have any projects or shows coming up that you are particularly excited about?

a)I am trying to learn VJing! I also intend to do some live performances of digital live painting... For the moment, I work on orders and I will not delay in preparing the exhibition ETNIK'Art that be held from September 24 to October 11, 2009 at the Kraft Factory in
Liège, Belgium.

q) Do you follow contemporary art scenes? If so, how? What websites, magazines, galleries do you prefer?

a)Sure, but I also discover some interesting things when I'm traveling, when I meet people...

q) Ask yourself a question you'd like to answer, and answer it.

a)"Thierry, what do you want to do tonight?"
"The same thing we do every night — try to take over the world!"

q)Please introduce yourself.

a)My name is Meni Tzima, I am an illustrator.

q) Where do you live and work?

a)I live and work in Athens, Greece together with my husband, Nicko, and Ozi, our orange cat. We are the owners of Dinnerr, a small design studio. We offer print and web design services. I specialize in illustration & character design.

q) How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?

a)I like using colour and I enjoy experimenting with it. I also enjoy drawing characters. In general, I create happy images 

q) How did you start in the arts? How/when did you realize you were an artist?

a)I’m drawing ever since I can remember myself  Just because I really loved drawing, I received my sketching & painting training from a very young age. At a later stage, I studied graphic design in Athens and after graduation I found a job as a full time illustrator. Two years later, I decided to become a freelance illustrator and work on my own projects.

q) What are your favorite art materials and why?

a)For illustration commissions, I use pencils for the rough sketches and then, I finish the work on the computer. When I paint, my favorite materials are coloured pencils, acrylics and Indian ink.

q) What/who influences you most?

a)A walk in the city, music, anything that gets me in the mood to paint.

q) Describe a typical day of art making for you.

a)I wake up, press snooze button, wake up again, play with my cat, dress, go to work, make coffee, check emails, decide the kind of music to listen to, do what needs to be done, make random sketches to random pieces of paper and forget about them for months, do more stuff that need to be done, play, do more work, play again.

q) Do you have goals, specific things you want to achieve with your art or in your career as an artist?

a)No special goals, my plan is to keep working, and see what happens.

q) What contemporary artists or developments in art interest you?

a)I’m interested in painting, animation, story writing, toys, comics, … I wish I had the time to do it all!

q) How long does it typically take you to finish a piece?

a)It depends on the project. When I’m working on commissioned projects I am working fast . On a personal level of work, I have many unfinished pieces, but I do finish them eventually. Not too many, but I have too many ideas I’d like to work on and so many sketches I should start working on. I think that what I love doing the most is sketching and planning new projects.

q) Do you enjoy selling your pieces, or are you emotionally attached to them?

a)I get commissioned to create illustrations or characters and licence my work for certain uses. I like seeing my work used and making my clients happy. Also, I enjoy selling original artworks or giving them as presents to my friends. Making people happy with my art makes me feel good. Very often I get attached to my artworks but I see it as my creations are adopted by other people who love them the same as I love them. I like thinking that they started their life somewhere else.

q) Is music important to you? If so, what are some things you're listening to now?

a)Yes, music is very important to me. In general I’m listening to post rock & metal , usually progressive death & doom metal. Lately I’ve been listening a lot to : Opeth, Ataraxie, Burning witch, Disembowelment, Godspeed you! Black Emperor and I will always listen to King Diamond because he is the King after all  Although the music I listen to is nothing like the work I produce, I think there is a connection between my work and the music I listen to.

q) Books?

a)I love books. I read many stuff, I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s writing, his stories are so beautiful. I also enjoy collecting and reading horror books for fun.

q) What theories or beliefs do you have regarding creativity or the creative process?

a)None. I like to paint when I feel good and then I feel even better.

q) What do you do (or what do you enjoy doing) when you're not creating?

a)Watching films, reading, playing video games, cooking, drinking beer, playing with my cat. Fun stuff.

q) Do you have any projects or shows coming up that you are particularly excited about?

a)I’ve been working on a personal project for the past couple of years between commissioned projects. It is a story about 2 characters living in a strange world. I keep working on the story, the world and the characters and I’m very excited about it. I hope I will be able to show it to the world soon 

q) Do you follow contemporary art scenes? If so, how? What websites, magazines, galleries do you prefer?

a)I try to look at art and see new things from different artists every day. I visit some blogs, I receive newsletters from artists I like, follow interesting people on twitter, I also like the randomness of fffound.

q) Ask yourself a question you'd like to answer, and answer it.

a)Eh ?

q) Any advice for aspiring artists?

a)Always remember to be yourself and be nice!

Interview with Tumbler and Tipsy

q) Where do you live and work?

a)I live in a studio in Los Angeles, CA that I am currently working out of as well.

q) How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?

a)I would describe my work as being very fashion forward and unique. I recycle and reconstruct vintage clothing to transform them into a completely new look. I mix the clothing with other garments to make new pieces of modern and contemporary art in fashion.

q) How did you start in the arts? How/when did you realize you were an artist?

a)I have been very interested in the arts and fashion since I was very a young kid. I started creating clothes when I was a teenager but didn’t realize it was more than just a hobby until I took time off from my professional figure skating career. Once I had time to pursue my passion in the arts I realized I had finally found my niche. It was just a really organic transition for me to make..

q) What are your favorite art materials and why?

a)I love working with vintage garments from the 1920’s all the through the 1980’s. I think each piece of clothing has its own history and that past needs to be revealed and told with a modern spin.

q) What/who influences you most?

a)The biggest inspiration for my collection has been travelling the world. My career as a professional figure skater has given me the opportunity to travel to over 40 countries and 600 cities worldwide. Experiencing so many cultures and traditions gave me a new prospective on fashion and art and through my collection I want to incorporate all of the things that I saw.

q) Describe a typical day of art making for you.

a)I like to start the day very early! I wake up at around 5:30 am and start working right away. I’ll work until about 10:30am and then take my first break which usually includes a snack and checking my email. After my break I get into a creative zone and will keep working until at least 5:30. I like to take my time and work at my own pace. I hate being rushed when I have a vision; a lot of my best art happens in the early in the morning or very late at night when I am not disturbed by the outside world.

q) Do you have goals, specific things you want to achieve with your art or in your career as an artist?

a)Yes! I have many goals and dreams that I will like to achieve and conquer. My first major goal is to make it into Vintage Fashion Week in Los Angeles so that I can really show what my collection is all about! I would love to be able to showcase my collections in major publications such as Vogue, W and other high fashion magazines. But my ultimate goal is to get the world to embrace a new genre of clothing that will help make the world a more friendly, less cluttered, place to live.

q) What contemporary artists or developments in art interest you?

a)I love contemporary, modern and pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, Salvador Dali, Picasso and Takashi Murakami.

q) How long does it typically take you to finish a piece?

a)Every garment that I reconstruct is different. One garment will take me a day and another will take me a week. It all depends on how much reconstruction is needed and what plus embellishments I am going to do.

q) Do you enjoy selling your pieces, or are you emotionally attached to them?

a)At first it was very hard to let them go! I definitely have an emotional attachment to my pieces but that is all part of the artistic process I think. However, the more I grow as an artist and designer the easier it has been to sell them. Now I’m at the point where I am just super excited to share my pieces with the world!

q) Is music important to you? If so, what are some things you're listening to now?

a)Music has always been super important to me! I love music! Right now I have been listening a lot to the Silversun Pickups, Muse, Chillout Sessions, Ladytron, The Faint and The Killers.

q) Books?

a)I just read a book by Budd Schulberg called, “What Makes Sammy Run?”.

q) What theories or beliefs do you have regarding creativity or the creative process?

a)I think to each their own! I really don’t have many beliefs on creativity because you cannot set limits on creativity! It needs to be explored and embellished and can take a few minutes or a lifetime. I don’t think there should be any limits or restrictions to creating art because that is what makes art so special and organic.

q) What do you do (or what do you enjoy doing) when you're not creating?

a)I love to travel, spend time with my friends, watch movies, and just enjoy life. I have a really great life and I try to live each day to the fullest.

q) Do you have any projects or shows coming up that you are particularly excited about?

a)I am very excited to debut this fall with my first in store collection which is debuting in August across the United States in select boutiques. I am also working on a new web series called “Producing A Star.” The concept of the show is to find the next big pop star like Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera and I will be the show’s stylist, so you will definitely see a lot of Tumbler and Tipsy.

q) Do you follow contemporary art scenes? If so, how? What websites, magazines, galleries do you prefer?

a) I am very involved with artists and art galleries in Los Angeles and New York City. When I use to travel, I tried to visit one art gallery a week in each city I was in. I love to collect art and have started to build a pretty decent collection. I find art fascinating so I am always on the lookout for new passionate artists.

q) Ask yourself a question you'd like to answer, and answer it.

a)

Question: What will I have for lunch today?

Answer: Sushi J

q) Any advice for aspiring artists?

a)If you have a passion in life, follow it. The passion inside you will drive you to success.

q) Where can we see more of your work online?

a)You can view more of my work online at www.TumblerandTipsy.com.
