Interview with Thierry Jaspart

q) Please introduce yourself.

a)Hello! My name is Thierry Jaspart, 23 years old... I'm an illustrator / graphic designer.

q) Where do you live and work?

a)I live and work in
Liège, Belgium.

q) How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?

a)I think that others should speak better than me, but... It's visual art. Mainly illustrations, but also computer graphics, street art, engraving, etc. I also enjoy doing digital live painting performances at concerts or parties.

I try to vary my work as much as possible. I draw a lot of birds...

For me, a work is ready to be published when it makes me laugh.

q) How did you start in the arts? How / when did you realize you were an artist?

a)Since I was a child... This is what I always wanted to do.

q) What are your favorite art materials and why?

a)Adobe Photoshop and my Wacom tablet because I always been a "nerd", hehe...

The linocut, because I like net and synthetic forms. I really enjoy digging the pattern, print it...

Pencils too...

q) What / who influences you most?

a)The everyday life. The people I meet, what I find absurd or what makes me laugh...

q) Describe a typical day of art making for you.

a)I get up late, but chhht! it shouldn't be repeated!

I open a can of soda.

I prepare a few sheets and a pencil.

I turn on my computer.

I put some music.

And here we go!

q) Do you have goals, specific things you want to achieve with your art or in your career as an artist?

a)To continue to publicize my work, hoping it's appreciated. I want to continue to have fun, work on interesting projects with cool people...

q) What contemporary artists or developments in art interest you?

a)Digital art, VJing, street art...

q) How long does it typically take you to finish a piece?

a)It depends, but usually I draw quite fast.

q) Do you enjoy selling your pieces, or are you emotionally attached to them?

a)I'm quite sad sometimes when I'm attached to a work, but this doesn't really matter... Buy! Buy Now! ;-)

q) Is music important to you? If so, what are some things you're listening to now?

a)Yeah! This is one of my passions. Actually, I'm pretty eclectic... Perhaps a slight preference for rock music, electronic music, folk...

q) Books?

a)Unfortunately, I'm not a big reader... But I have a lot of illustrated books in my library.

q) What theories or beliefs do you have regarding creativity or the creative process?

a)I like artists who produce personal work... An idea is always better when it's true and assumed.

q) What do you do (or what do you enjoy doing) when you're not creating?

a)Spending time on social networks on the Internet, going out with friends, listening to music...

q) Do you have any projects or shows coming up that you are particularly excited about?

a)I am trying to learn VJing! I also intend to do some live performances of digital live painting... For the moment, I work on orders and I will not delay in preparing the exhibition ETNIK'Art that be held from September 24 to October 11, 2009 at the Kraft Factory in
Liège, Belgium.

q) Do you follow contemporary art scenes? If so, how? What websites, magazines, galleries do you prefer?

a)Sure, but I also discover some interesting things when I'm traveling, when I meet people...

q) Ask yourself a question you'd like to answer, and answer it.

a)"Thierry, what do you want to do tonight?"
"The same thing we do every night — try to take over the world!"

q) Any advice for aspiring artists?

a)"Be yourself", try to create artworks as personal as possible...

q) Where can we see more of your work online?

a)
