Interview with Aaron McLaughlin





q)What is your earliest art-related memory?

a)primary school mornings. without any knowing of how dangerous it was, i remember staring at the sun until it was an array of spinning colours. very stupid/ awesome when looking back

q) Who has had the greatest influence on your work?


a)my colleagues


q) What are the main tools of your craft?


a)a pair of scissors, alcohol and heavy funk music


q) Is a formal education important?


a)totally. the best thing an artist can learn is that there are rules to creating art. the beauty of these boundaries is breaking them down later, revealing no limitations


q) What is the biggest misconception about art?


a)that it requires meaning


q) Which is more important in art - concept or execution?


a)execution of course


q) What theme or aesthetic are you most drawn too?


a)colour, composition and humour


q) What is your favorite piece of art in your home?


a)when i was growing up we had the Sacred Heart in our hallway. most disturbing image Ive ever seen..


q) If you could collaborate with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?


a)too hard one. id have to say Miranda July.


q) Which emerging artist do you think more people should know about?


a)there are so so many, if you have a flickr you'll understand. if i had to say a name, it'd be Andreas Banderas


q) What has been your greatest achievement to date?


a)getting into the Glasgow School of Art, being at the GSA have been the best years of my life.


q) What has been your biggest roadblock?


a)myself


q) How do you define success?


a)a nice boat


q) What will be the name of your autobiography?


a)i have no idea, id prefer a film than an autobiography. starring Bill Murray


q)What is the best piece of (art-related) advice you’ve ever been given?


a)never throw anything away
